In these ten spots, expats will likely be greeted with a warm welcome

When moving abroad, especially when you have a family, there is a lot to consider when it comes to quality of life.

Expats have to think about everything from access to affordable and quality education, to available leisure activities and family well-being, on top of the more mundane issues such as moving costs.

To determine where expats might find the best success of fitting in fast, global community network InterNations recently conducted their annual Expat Insider survey of more than 14,000 expats from 191 countries, asking residents to rate a number of aspects about life abroad, including how easy it was to settle in, a country’s friendliness and ease of making friends.

Inlea took a look at the countries that made the top 10 spots:

10. Czech Republic — The country shot up the rankings from 14th to 2nd as 74% agreed that education is easy to afford, although it did not reach the top spot due to the quality of that education.

9. Luxemburg —It may get a mediocre score in the Availability of Childcare & Education subindex but was one of the best for Family Well-Being and Children’s Safety.

8. Austria — The country fell from first place last year, to 4th place this year, due to a poor showing in the Family Well-Being and Quality of Education sub-indexes. “In addition, while Austria has never done well with regard to a friendly attitude towards families with children, it is now in the bottom three for this factor (43rd out of 45),” said the report.

7. Australia — Scored well across the board but it hit the number one spot for available leisure activities for children, which boosted it into the top 10.

6. Costa Rica — Warm weather and improvements in the language category helped boost the country. 79% also said they feel “at home” in the local culture.

5. New Zealand — The country may be out of the way but peacefulness, good healthcare, and good education all contribute to expats saying they are extremely happy there.

4. Mexico — The country ranks number one in the ease of settling in index, as well as highly across the weather and friendliness sub-indexes.

3. Ecuador  The country fell 16 places in the quality of life index, but in terms of personal happiness, expats say it’s one of the best places in the world for a happy life. Cost of living is low and weather and activities are abundant.

2. Malta — The country is a favourite destination for Europeans looking to relocate, thanks to the ease of settling in, low language barrier, low cost of living and enviable weather. Interestingly, the survey shows that personal happiness is one of the best because 70% of expats in Malta surveyed are in a relationship, compared to the global average of 63%.

1. Taiwan — The country rose right to the top of the ranking for its quality of medical care and its affordability. It also polled first place for quality of life among female respondents and second for men.
