Hiring the right person
Hiring the right employees can make or break your business. The success of your business depends on the quality of your employees. Small businesses, especially, know that one bad hire can ruin their entire team’s productivity.
Employee recruitment is about managing stress, as you will constantly be judged on your selection, and you obviously cannot please everybody in your organization.
However, there are certain rules that you can use to hire the right employee for your business every time:
1. Define the job before hiring an employee
Hiring the right employee starts with a job analysis. The job analysis enables you to collect information about the duties, responsibilities, necessary skills, outcomes, and work environment of a particular job.
The information from the job analysis is fundamental to developing the job description for the new employee. The job description assists you to plan your recruiting strategy for hiring the right employee.
2. Seek employees who will fit into the company culture
Will the candidate fit the culture of the organization and play well with others? Do they share the same values/goals? People who genuinely believe in your company mission will naturally fit into the company culture. Having a supportive work environment populated by peers who share their passion will allow employees to put their best work forward and thrive within the organization.
3. Look for someone with a commitment to their career
A person committed to his or her career is the candidate you want to hire. You don’t want to hire an employee who switches careers or jobs frequently, just to get a higher salary. If a candidate is not loyal to any company, hiring this person could definitely be a problem for your business.
4. Look beyond the résumé
Try not to go through a reiteration of the candidate’s résumé. You already have that on hand and can verify any of the information provided. What you need to find out is what makes the job applicant tick, and whether or not she or he is going to be the right fit for your business.
5. Hire interns
People may disagree, but this is one of the best ways to hire the right employee for your business. You know all of their strengths, weaknesses, skills, knowledge, attitudes, behaviour, confidence levels, and even practical evidence of work. What else do you need to know?
Hiring the right employee enhances your work culture and pays you back a thousand times over in high employee morale, positive forward thinking planning and accomplishing challenging goals. This is not a comprehensive guide to hiring, but these steps are key when you want to hire an employee. Try them out, lead your company to success.
