How to relax in a plane in a business trip

Remember business trips don’t have to be work, work, work! Find how to make the most of those boring business plane trips with these top tips.

Wear Comfortable Clothes

Start by removing your shoes. Sleeping in your bed with your shoes wouldn’t cross your mind, right? Just wearing your socks will make you instantly more at ease. Some frequent fliers go as far as changing into their pajamas once they have boarded the plane. If that would make you feel uncomfortable, just opt for large pants.

In order to avoid deep vein thrombosis (DVT), doctors recommend using compression stockings. The idea is that you don’t prevent the blood from flowing in your legs. Forget about looking good: to get some Z’s on a plane, comfy is the new black!

Practice deep breathing

When we are stressed and anxious, our breathing becomes shallow. Similarly, when we are calm and relaxed our breathing deepens. The mind, heartbeat and breathing rate are directly connected.

If you are nervous or anxious during a flight, and you find it challenging to control your thoughts, focus on your breathing. Take your awareness to the navel and breathe deeply. The navel is centre is called Manipura chakra, which translates to “city of jewels.” This is because the navel is the centre of action, where we get most of our prana or vital energy from.

Breathing from the navel will help us stay relaxed and serene in many of life’s challenging situations.

Avoid coffee

Coffee dehydrates the body, which can lead to nausea and headaches when flying. Caffeine can also stimulate flight anxiety and nervousness. It takes five to six hours for caffeine to wear off completely, so it’s best to stay away from it when travelling.

Besides, airplane cabins are dry environments, which can make your skin and eyeballs dryer than usual. This is because the aircraft must pump external air to dilute air in the cabin and crew which is loaded with carbon dioxide. Since coffee is a natural diuretic, its best to stay away from it.  Instead, have relaxing beverages such as chamomile.

Prepare yourself for sleep

You’ll be on the plane for the equivalent of a whole day or night, so it’s worth bringing a few long-haul flight essentials. Start with a lightweight blanket and invest in a good travel pillow to make sleeping less of a neckache. Forget that those other 349 passengers are even there with a good sleep mask and a pair of ear plugs.

Finally, slip in some basic toiletries, such as a hand luggage sized toothbrush and toothpaste, and you’ll feel that bit fresher when you land. If you want more tips on how little luxuries can transform your journey, check our article on making economy feeling like first class.
